Purpose:

The project aims at assessing sustainability of community based watersheds developed through mobilization since 2010. The project will identify sustainability indicators and methods for assessing these indicators. Moreover, it identifies challenges and gaps in the components and strategies of watershed management in the highlands at different agro-ecologies, farming systems and landscapes. The outputs of the project is expected to support the sustainable land management program and implementation of watershed management interventions. This project activities allows to appropriately responding to questions: 1) What is the sustainability status and prospect of watersheds developed by the community? 2) What are the factors affecting watershed sustainability? 3) How effective are the institutions in place in ensuring sustainability of watersheds? 4) What are the roles of gender and effects of land certification in ensuring sustainability?

The outputs of the project will be used by SLM planners and practitioners, researchers, and policy makers. It shall assist them in assessing the status of watersheds, gaps and challenges in developing and sustaining watersheds at different agro-ecologies and landscape features.

General objective: To contribute to the sustainability of watersheds developed through community mobilization and thus improve the livelihoods of rural communities, poverty reduction, and enhancement of ecosystem functions of the Ethiopian highlands.

The specific objectives of the project include:

  1. To develop methodological framework for measuring sustainability of watersheds developed through community mobilization,
  2. To assess the sustainability status and prospect of watersheds developed through community mobilization using the developed methodological framework,
  3. To describe and evaluate effectiveness of existing institutional arrangements for implementation and sustainability of watersheds developed through community mobilization,
  4. To assess the gender dimension of watershed development and the role of women in ensuring the sustainability of watersheds developed through community mobilization, and
  5. To evaluate effects of land administration (land certification) policy on the sustainability of watersheds developed through community mobilization.
  6. Developing sustainability measuring indicatorsbased on literature review and field based testing, list of sustainability indicators will be developed that will later use to assess the sustainability of watersheds.
  7. Field observation through transect walkmapping and recording the biophysical attributes of watershed interventions and landscape features.
  8. Focus group discussion (FGD)FGD aim to explore practices and perceptions from different groups on different aspects related to the project objectives towards achieving watershed sustainability. It is more important to triangulate information gathered through other methods. Using already prepared checklists independent focus group discussion will be held with
  9. Rating performance of sustainability indicators with expertsthis method used to identify key sustainability indicators applicable to assess sustainability at different agro-ecologies and assess performance of case study watersheds.
  10. Household surveythis method will gather household level information and perception for sustainability.

The project will be implemented in 26 case study watersheds at different agro-ecologies (Dega, Weyna Dega and Kolla). The project activities include
