1Water and Land Resource Centre (WLRC) in collaboration to the Federal Ministry of of Water Irrigation and Electricity and Global Water Partnership for Easter Africa organized an 18 days training on Integrated Water Resource Management for River Basins in Ethiopia. The overarching goal of this training program is build the capacity of river basins to contribute towards the enhanced water resource management performance in river basins in Ethiopia..

 

At the end of the training, participants were expected to:

  1. explain water resource management opportunities, issues, policies and regulations under Ethiopian context;
  2. know the roles and responsibilities of river basin organization, and identify their role in the organization;  
  3. State the principles of IWRM and its integration towards the SDG, GTP, CRGE, Vision 2030;
  4. undertake the basin situation assessment and appraise the overall situation of their river basin; and
  5. Be able to develop basin hydro/pysiographic information using WLRC’s Watershed Tool, Google Earch Pro, and GIS/arc hydro application;
  6. Contribute towards the preparation and implementation of river basin strategic plans and their monitoring and evaluation.

The training was concluded with closing remark from HE Ato Kebde Gerba, State Minster, Ministry of Water Irrigation and Electricity. The minster emphasized the attention given by the government towards the development management of water resource of country as government believes that water is the primary vehicle in the economic transformation, poverty reduction, societal wellbeing in the country. He emphasized that the trainees should strive to put into practice the skills they have acquired and experience they shared from their colleagues in different basins into practice and work towards establishing an exemplary basin that proactively contributed to the development effort of the country.

WLRC Director General, Dr. Gete Zeleke gave interview to Ethiopian Press Agency, about the watershed management sustainability problem.
