An over the canal Super Passage and close to 400 m long masonry canal effectively intercepts and conveys stormwater and sediment-laden runoff directly to the Hare River, preventing these flows from entering the Chano Chaliba–Chano Mille modern irrigation canal.
For many years, the Chano Chaliba–Chano Mille irrigation canal was heavily affected by sediment deposition, which eventually rendered the canal non-functional. Through the BRIGHT Project, the accumulated sediment was removed, restoring the canal to its original conveyance capacity and bringing the irrigation system back into operation. The Passage was constructed to sustainably prevent storm and sediment from entering the canal. Local communities, government sector offices and Arba Minch University participated in the construction of the structure.
