[WLRC June 2024]: A team from the Water and Land Resource Centre (WLRC) participated in a water quality monitoring training workshop with a specific focus on geospatial data capture and analysis. The training was organized by the Water Security and Sustainable Development Hub at Newcastle University and held June 24 – 28, 2024.
Contents covered included both conceptual aspects and practical applications of Structure from Motion (SfM) Photogrammetry and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAVs); Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)/Global Positioning Systems (GPS) Positioning; and water quality environmental lab analysis.
The practical session was on data capture demonstrations at a lake lake near Newcastle University using UAV multispectral imaging, Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV), lab in a suitcase, in-situ monitoring, and UAV photogrammetry applications for land cover mapping and water quality monitoring.
In addition to the training, the participants had the opportunity to network with experts from Newcastle University and the Colombia team. They also visited the Urban Science Building that hosts the Information System of the City. The WLRC participants were about eight professional staff from different divisions, allowing for multidisciplinary application of the training themes. The knowledge and skills learnt are quite applicable in many aspects of WLRC’s work. The team appreciates the organizers of the workshop and WLRC for providing all the necessary facilities.
