The Water and Land Resource Centre, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Energy, conducted a three-day capacity development training on energy-efficient improved cook stove design, utilization, and promotion to support forest conservation and strengthen Integrated Water Resources Management in the Woshi Catchment.
“The only gauging station on the Modjo River was gradually buried due to excessive sediment build-up linked to unregulated sand mining and altered river flow conditions caused by a nearby water passage structure, which has created a backwater effect that traps water upstream, while sand mining activities downstream are discharging large amounts of sediment into the river”, resents Dr. Ermias Teferi Water Division Director at WLRC.
A two-day stakeholders workshop held in Jimma town, May 15-16, 2026, reviewed the technical audit report, IWRM-related resource mapping, and governance of the Omo-Gibe Basin. The workshop brought together 41 stakeholders from four regional bureaus (seven per region), universities, research institutes, the Jimma town administration (mayor), NGOs, and a union.

A regional training on the WATDEV Toolbox for agricultural water management was held from May 5th – 7th, 2026, at Capital Hotel, Addis Ababa, bringing together decision-makers and technical experts from Kenya, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, and regions of Ethiopia
Construction of a nature-based wastewater treatment system for condominium housing units was officially started in Gabriel Kebele, Tebasie Sub-city, of the Debre Berhan City Administration. The sub-project is being implemented with support of the BRIGHT Project.
Integrated watershed management interventions are in good progress at Wedecha catchment of Awash Basin, with ongoing efforts focused on soil and water conservation, gully rehabilitation, livelihood enhancement, and water harvesting.

Implementers of and partners in the BRIGHT Project, namely the Water and Land Resource Center (WLRC), the Ministry of Water and Energy including the Awash Basin Administration Office, convened a catchment-level consultative meeting in Bishoftu town and facilitated the formal establishment of a Wedecha Dam Administration Steering Committee.
