The Shama Kebele (Laka) project, Chencha Zurya Woreda —a combined water supply and irrigation using unattended flow—is now underway in the Hare Catchment hot spot! Community consultation and mobilization for pipeline trench excavation began on December 3, 2025. Pipeline trench excavation underway to lay transmission mains and Spring capping & source protection to follow.
Currently, Shama Kebele has no protected water source. Nearly 2,000 people rely on distant, unprotected water points. This daily struggle falls heavily on women and children, who spend hours walking to collect water—time lost for education, livelihoods, and family well-being, while also risking health and safety.
Impact:
• Safe water access for 2,000 residents
• Reduced burden on women and children
• Time returned for education and income generation
• Improved health and community resilience
• Additional irrigation for home gardens
This project is more than infrastructure—it’s a step toward breaking the cycle of poverty and building a healthier, more prosperous Shama Kebele.
