An event where African Hydrogeologists across borders connected to discuss Africa’s most pressing groundwater challenges under the theme “Uniting Groundwater Research, Innovation, and Collaboration for Water Security in Africa,” was conducted from 28th– 30th Aug over Zoom. This event highlighted solutions for resilience, sustainable management, and equitable access to groundwater resources. The Water and Land Resources Center (WLRC) was represented by Ground Water Specialist Dr. Behailu Berhanu at that event which brought together more than 175 participants from 27 countries, including representatives of key African regional organizations such as African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), IGAD, Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), and Southern African Development Community (SADC).
According to Dr. Behailu Berhanu, the congress was opened with high-level addresses that emphasized the central role of groundwater in achieving Africa’s Water Vision 2063. Distinguished professors delivered keynote speeches that shed light on Africa’s hydrogeology, outlining its challenges, opportunities, and potential pathways for the future. It was learnt that researchers from across the continent also presented their work, sharing a wide range of perspectives and insights that enriched the discussions.
One of the major highlights of the congress was the launch of Africa’s Hydrogeology Capacity Survey, which presented preliminary findings on existing knowledge gaps, training needs, and opportunities for collaboration. The Inaugural congress was set to set the foundation of an annual tradition. WLRC’s active representation at this important event reaffirms its commitment to advancing water science, strengthening capacity, and promoting the sustainable management of water and land resources for Africa’s future. The congress concluded with a resolution that charts a collective path forward for African hydrogeology.
