[July 10, 2026] Water and Land Resource Centre (WLRC), led by the Executive Director, Dr. Gete Zeleke, presented the progress of the Ethiopian Basin Information System (ETH-BIS) to senior leadership of the Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE), including H.E. Dr. Habtamu Itefa, Minister of Water and Energy; H.E. Ato Motuma Mekassa, Senior Adviser to the Minister and Acting State Minister for the Water Management Sector; and H.E. Dr. Ing. Sultan Wolie, State Minister for Energy.
The presentation made by the system development team and the DG provided an update on the development of ETH-BIS, a national digital platform designed to strengthen integrated river basin management through improved access to reliable water resources information, to support evidence-based planning, informed decision-making, and coordinated management of Ethiopia’s water resources. The WLRC IT team highlighted the system’s current development status, demonstrated its core functionalities, and outlined the next phases of implementation. Discussions also focused on how ETH-BIS will contribute to improving data integration, information sharing, and decision support across the country’s water sector institutions.
Following the presentation, Ministry officials commended the progress made and held a constructive discussion on the way forward. H.E. Dr. Habtamu Itefa provided strategic guidance and recommendations to support the continued development of the platform, emphasizing its importance in advancing effective water resources management and strengthening digital transformation within the sector.
