Workshop on New Hydrometeorological Database

WLRC-Water Security and Sustainable Development Hub, GCRF, project facilitates stakeholders’ training workshop on a new hydro-meteorological database to support water resource management on the 7thand 8th August 2023 at Getfam Hotel, Addis Ababa. The aim of the workshop is to introduce the application of Ethiopian Database for Hydrometeorological Indices (EDHI) that is developed by Dr. Ermias Teferi of WLRC and Dr. Greg O. Donnell of Newcastle University.

In the opening of the workshop the Deputy Director of WLRC Dr. Tena Alamirew briefly introduces the core mandates and achievements of WLRC on water, climate, land and livelihoods. Dr. Tena emphasizes missions of WLRC envisioned to be the knowledge-hub of land and water in the broader Horn of Africa. He stated the Center’s different accomplishments on the land and water research, development project and the development new knowledge sharing platforms. The GCRF project, funded by UKRI and lead by Newcastle University is one of the projects that WLRC works on Abbay, Awash and Central Rift Valley basins. EDHI, the automated platform that is developed by WLRC and the Newcastle team to manage the hydrometeorological indices, training is significant to introduce the database and also work together for its application in your respective sector.

In the workshop Dr. Greg and Dr. Ermias introduce the EDHI and give presentation on hydrometeorological data Quality control, flood frequency analysis, rainfall and flow variability, Eco hydrology, hydrological modelling, and application of EDHI for Irrigation surface water availability.

The participants are from Ethiopian meteorological Institute, Ministry of Water and Energy, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Irrigation and Law Lands, Ethiopia Water works design and supervision, Addis Ababa University, and ANRS Irrigation Development offices as well as NGO’s like World vision
